• For making mountains = Edit mode > Edit Terrain
Smooth tool is a good tool if you dont want sharp edges on the mountains. Experiment with different things you find it quite usefull
As you can see at the first image, mountains have sharp peaks and looks pretty ugly, when you use smooth tool to soften edges it will more look like a mountain than spikes
this is the most usefull example of smooth tool, you can create natural environment with Edit terrain + Smooth tool.
Edit mode > object brush ( or press T )
View > Source object list
You will see the list of the objects there. Use Move / Rotate / Resize Tools to make adjustments.
edit mode > Detail texture ( or press D ) , you will see the list of the usable textures, you can create roads , grass and rocks.
