Sometimes it's just preferable. There's a bunch of very specific item behaviour in there for which they don't otherwise have any existing designated identifiers, so short of adding your own (which doesn't always work in every case)... it is the simpler, more ideal option.

Bear in mind it's for things that pretty much never change though.

Don't even talk to me about skills, either. We made great pains to avoid doing that (where mgame does, happily), to the point of creating such added complexity which has bitten us a few times in the past. :/
