happens to me too usually when i open the PUS or if i minimize the game ...i look back and it says merchant ended

I think the inactivity DC is much more likely at the moment due to the lag spikes on the server.

As for setting up the merchant... If someone PMs you or trades or pretty much does anything which targets you, then it cancels the merchant while you're putting it up.

Once merchant is set up, then pretty much anything YOU do will close it again. Moving items in your inventory, opening the letters page, probably even spending skill or stat points. About the only thing you can safely do is chat or spin around on the spot.
