I used to think that too, because +7 md has ap 87, +6 shard has ap 86.. But for melee weapons, even despite the ap, a weapon that is a higher "tier" will do more damage. Folks have been testing this.

A clannie just switched to dual +6 shards from +7 md's a couple days ago, and he reports the damage is higher.
