so aight earlier today I was playing GTASA:MP and suddenly the game freezes, screen colors went crazy and I was forced to do a force shut down to restart the laptop. Now the screen colors at startup are screwed up, for example BIOS background has vertical pink and green stripes, texts have 'shadows' etc.
Ok so I start the laptop, loads up itself just fine until log-in screen: it never reaches that. After the windows has loaded, black screen shows up and it won't load to login screen. So I tried startup repair, had no effect and from BIOS I tried HDD repair and that gives some error and won't start. So I am out of ideas what to do next: use Vista recovery CD I made after the purchase of laptop or is there any other way?
And about the recovery CD, does it keep all the data on HDD? Cause I have some quite important documents and files on HDD so my question is, will it or will it not format the C: ?

And some stats about the laptop if that helps:
    T2130 dual core 1.86
    2 GB of ram
    Vista Home Premium
    Nvidia 7400 GO

Never mind, after the laptop was turned off for several hours, it started to work correctly again. Guess it just overheated or something (has never happened before though).

do you often use your laptop on your knees / in bed etc. could be dust build-up that's causing it to overheat.

just open your laptop and use compressed air or blow really hard to clear out most dust if it keeps happening after playing or using it for a while. if you have a fan and cooling unit that can be separated from the cpu be sure to get it off and clean the fins of the cooling unit with a soft brush.

I had a desktop video card that went bad with similar symptoms as you descrived, especially all the banding you describe. As this is a laptop your talking about, a vid chip going bad is pretty much a total loss of the unit, so I would backup all your important documents, photos, music, etc, right away, just to be careful. That said, my current laptop would get noticably hot, freeze and bluescreen (pc bluescreens automatically as most have thermal sensor to avoid damage). I hit in with the canned air, and was surprised how much dust shot out of it ! Good as new now...

when the first defects appeared, the 1 year warranty had been passed by 10 days or so and now it has been 1,5 years since I bought it.
