Default Help:Building a PC from Scratch

Finally getting back into KO after a long wait. All I have is a laptop and it aint going to cut it. I always wanted to build my own PC. I have a guy which will put the whole thing together and install everything. I just need to buy the parts for him. I have no clue where to start.

Can anyone guide me in the right direction to buy parts? With a budget of 500$ what am I looking at? Would it be better just to buy one made?

    1) It is always better to build ur own
    2) 500 bucks is a little low. But you wanna use the pc only for KO or do you want a pc that can run games like bf3 aswell?

For gaming purposes it will only be KO.

I dont have a monitor yet, im planning to buy that after I build it.

I never knew that their is a AMD build and a Intel build, so I assume when building a computer the components focus around the processor?

I havent decided what processor , im on a budget so im leaning towards the AMD side because its cheaper.

    i5 intel processor (quad core): Canada Computers | CPU | Intel Core i5-2400 Quad-Core Socket LGA1155, 3.10Ghz, 6MB L3 Cache, 32nm (Retail Boxed) (BX80623I52400)

    AMD Phenom (Quad Core) : Canada Computers | CPU | AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition (120W) Quad Core Socket AM3, 3.5GHz, 8Mb Cache, 1800MHz HT, 45nm (HDZ970FBGMBOX)

What would be better? Any other options?

The intel one would give you a bit more juice, but if you're only planning on playing KO and doing some other non heavy gameing or video/picture prossessing both would be fine.

If you could send me a website that has a good overview of computers I can make you, atleast one close to the price you've set for it.

    Canada Computers | Desktop Memory

That site has alot of computer parts, they have locations near my house too. If you can build me a computer from that site so I can get a rough idea of what im looking at that will great.
    Thanks so much

I gave it a shot, and i came up with the sum of 566.93usd, well its with out a additional cpu fan (I would get this if you could).
    VCSA002155 Sapphire (11186-01-20G) AMD Radeon HD 6750 1GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6750 Chipset (750Mhz) 1GB GDDR5 (4000Mhz) Memory Dual-Link DVI/HDMI/Display Port PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card $109.99
    RAMC000120 Corsair XMS3 Classic 4GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 DIMM, Optimized for Core i7, i5 and Core 2 (CMX4GX3M1A1600C9) $25.99
    HDSG002084 Seagate Barracuda (ST500DM002) SATA3 6.0Gb/s 500GB 16MB Cache (OEM) $94.99
    PSAT000548 Antec HCG-750 High Current Gamer 750W 80Plus Bronze V2.3 $139.99 Special Order 139.99
    CPUA001735 AMD A6-3500 Triple Core 2.1GHz APU , Socket FM1, 3Mb L2 Cache, 65W 32nm (AD3500OJGXBOX) $99.99 In Stock 99.99
    MBGA001700 Gigabyte GA-A55M-DS2 Socket FM1 AMD A55 Chipset Dual-Channel DDR3 1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz 1x PCI-Express x16 GLAN 8.2-CH HD Audio 4x SATA 3Gb/s 8xUSB 2.0 DVI/VGA Micro ATX $64.99
CSCO000745 Cooler Master Elite 330U Black Mid Tower Case (RC330U-KKN1) $45.99 In Stock 45.99

I will give it another shot in a few hours but so far this is what I came up with.

I will try with dual core, and try to get a cheaper setup, btw do you have any computer parts from a older comp? like a Motherboard (p5q or w/e its called) well a hard disk could cheapen things up, an midtower would to.

here what i think you should go for,

    cpu- AMD Phenom II X4 960T -125
psu- COOLER MASTER Elite 460w -40
    mb- GIGABYTE GA-78LMT -65
    mem- G.SKILL Value 4GB -20
    hdd- HITACHI HDS721050CLA362 500gb -80
    case-Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid Tower(+3 fans) -50
    gpu- SAPPHIRE 100315L Radeon HD 6850 -150
disk- ASUS 24X DVD Burner -20
    =550

found all at newwgg.com. im not living in the us, so i couldnt put all the parts i wanted to in that list.with some research, im sure you can find better components at cheaper prices.
try to change that psu to something a bit more powerful
also you can trade a dvd from ur old computer to ur new 1 and if your current hdd is a 7200rpm and your happy with his storage capacity you can do the same and save few bucks.

Thanks alot guys, I raised my budget to 600$ - 650$. I have no parts, I can go to my local recycling dump they have old computers people drop off, but these are OLD, I guess I can use the tower casing on them.

Also the computer needs to have wifi, and all I need is 500GB of harddrive, thats more then enough.

Also the computers that you built for me, how would they withstand vs this computer just to get a rough base estimate: CyberpowerPC Gamer Dragon Desktop Computer featuring AMD Phenom II X6 1055T (GDA8200) - English : Performance & Gaming Computers - Best Buy Canada

also use http://www.newegg.com to find parts, they have cheap prices compare to most places.

I tried building a better computer then the one you listed for a lil less and I came up with this: (if you pm me with you e-mail I'll send u a cleaner looking form.
It came out 47.90 usd over your budget, and some thing i just figured out when I was done is that I could probably have gotten a package deal on the cpu and MB. PS I did this in 10 min b4 I had to go to get a my haircut, so I will try again later

im liking that computer setup, and it will be cheaper because I have "windows 7 ultimate" already so that will be -100$ on the cost. The 8GB of ram and a 6 core processor that should be more then enough. Also does a PSU take a big factor in the computers overall performance.

And for the processor how much more would it cost to get more then 2.8GHz like a 3.0 or 3.2 GHZ, also would this make a big difference?

    1. a good psu can deliver from 80 to 90 % of his labeled power, some others cant pull to 50%, so its depends. a good 600w+ is more than enough for u(just make sure its branded and have good reviews).
    2. 2x2gb = total of 4 gb ram, also enough.
    3. overclocking Phenom II X6 to 3.2ghz is really easy, specially with that mb ASUS M4A87TD, just make sure you have a good fan for the cpu , or get AMD Phenom II X6 1100T that come with standart 3.2 ghz, but you wont fell a big difference.

I went to my local computer store and came up with a little setup which I like, especially for the price. Let me know what you guys think.

    Canada Computers | CPU | AMD Bulldozer X6 FX-6100 (95W) Six Core Socket AM3+, 3.3GHz, 8Mb Cache,32nm (FD6100WMGUSBX)

    or

Whats the difference between these two? Which one is better?

    750W 110$ Power Supply Unit
I forget the name of it, its a well known brand tho and its high performance, uses a fan for cooling.

Let me know what you guys think about this, also should I go wit hthe AMD Phenom IIX6 processor, I saw so many good reviews on this, or the bulldozer 6 core processor I have, would the Phenom IIX6 also be good with the setup I choose (graphics card and motherboard and ram)

    Thanks

Also I dident included tower cause I havent decided yet, so thats around 70$, and I havent decided any type of memory, but im looking to get 500GB Harddrive, im not sure which one, i guess it will be around 100$ for a decent one.

    Thanks
