Howdy folks,

So I've finally decided to trash my computer and looking to build my own; however, I'm not entirely sure what goes with what so I would really appreciate it if you folks could put something together.

Processor: Intel Core i7 920 vs AMD Phenom II X4 940 (I've been reading some reviews and test results, they seem to be almost the same in performance wise)

Motherboard: Depends on the CPU ^ Although, I'm not even sure what motherboard can handle above CPUs

RAM: I'll figure something out. (I plan on going x64 bit)

Graphic Card: I will most likely stick with what I have for now, nVidia GeForce 9600 GT.

Case: <== No idea

Hard Drive: Not an issue.

Power Supply: <== No idea

Cooling System: <== No idea. It is probably needed for above CPUs, right?

I'm trying to build something solid, heck I've been using this P4 computer for 5 years now... So feel free to make your own list and/or adjust mine to your liking.

The i7 920 is the superior CPU but it also means that you will have to buy an expensive x58 motherboard and DDR3 ram instead of DDR2.

If you want the best computer that you can get then go with the i7, if you cannot afford to pay too much then get the AMD or an older Intel CPU.

Whats your budget?

Also, the Graphic Card is extremely important to how fast your games run but if you dont need a new one yet then stick with the 9600.

I have been doing my research for what will make an excellent i7 920 computer rig, so ask me about what hardware you should get and i'l help you out.

cpu i7 920
power supply 1000w Ultra
Ram 3 gigs of 1600MHZ
MB Check tigerdirect for X58 chipsets
Thermaltake spedo case
with the 3 gigs no need for 64 bit and you can run XP and this system would be crazy fast on xp

Thanks for the replies thus far. Graphic card is going to have to wait little bit until I expand my budget further, I'm more concerned with basics( motherboard, cpu, ram, cooling) first then move onto other stuff. I'd love to see your i7 920 computer list, Metalkon. =)

If you want to go crazy you can overclock this to 3.8 to 4.2 Ghz easily without too much heat coming off. I don't plan to overclock mine untill a few years from now when 4ghz becomes the norm. It acts like an 8 core processor through hyperthreading, and ahs a turbo mode which automaticly overclocks it to about 3ghz if you need that extra power.

Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...;Tpk=evga%20x58
Go by the brand name, this and the Gigabyte are suppose to be the best. All of the motherboards cost about the same except for a cheap gigabyte one with poor performance.

RAM
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?...N82E16820231225
Best bang for your buck and its high quality RAM also.

Harddrive
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?...N82E16822136218
This is the best HD that you can get for its price, if you put them in RAID (connect together to become a single HD) they will outperform the speed of some of the fastest hard drives on the market (also in raid) and you have an ass load of space on each of these also.

Both of these cases are great, a case is very important for your desktops cooling and everything. these are also very durable. If you wan't to go crazy then you could get the Cosmos S like what I did, I am waiting for it to be delivered to my house. With a big ass Graphic Card you will need space, with a full tower case you won't have to bother measuring the specs of your mid-sized one and trying to cramp it all in. The only disadvantage of having a full tower case is its size which means you will have to keep it on the floor. :P

There are cheaper cases but you get what you pay for, if you have more money to blow then get a good case.

Depends on how much that you wanna spend and how much Graphic Power that you need or want, the 9800 GTX is a good deal but they no longer support the 9800 GT free game deal. If you use high resolutions with max settings on brand new games then get one of the more expensive cards if you care about having crazy fps or a better looking game.

Heatsink
A good one will cost $50-80, they are used to cool down your CPU. The Cooler Master V8 is a good(and big) one but there are a few others that are better which I forgot the names of.

Water Cooling
Don't bother unless you buy your parts from NCIX and pay $50 for them to build and test it, stick to air cooling.

No prob, just remember to go cooler master for cases and all cooling needs because most of their products kick ass. If you need any more information about building an i7 computer then contact me.

Is this within your budget?

Yes, including the graphic card I'm about 3/4 of my budget so you would like to throw something in by all means go for it.

If you wanna look up the products then go to http://www.3dgameman.com/ to learn more about what your buying with his professional video reviews.

CPU
Don't get the i7 940 or 965, the 920 is superior to the 940 when overclocking and the 965 is a ripoff.

RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145224
This is suppose to be the best for an i7, it has the best brand name for power and ram related products and its just $50 more. Either go with this or the g.skill one, they are probably your best choices on the market. There is suppose to be a new line of g.skill ddr3 ram coming out (if not already out) which is suppose to blow the competition away.

Harddrive
Get two of those ones suggested in my earlier post, put them in a RAID configuration and they will outperform even velociraptor HD's in raid.

Graphic Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130449
Wait untill it goes under $300, its the best on the market right now but its not worth it. You don't need a card like this but in a few years you could get it for all of the new games, it should be about $200 by then. I don't reccomend this unless your crazy about gaming. If you ever get this card in the future when its cheaper then get evga for its good brand name.

Power Supply
Find a Corsair (this brand only) power supply with at least 700 watts and high ratings.

Computer Case

The reviews on newegg don't do this thing justice but they are made by normal people and not professional reviewers, its a very good case if you wanna spend a lil extra money. The known problems are the touch sensored start button fucking up and the side fan breaking. Those can be fixed if it happens, its an improved version of the Cosmos 1000 and its made of lighter material.

Extra's
Logitech G5 Mouse (Don't Get G7 because its a wireless mouse, and the G9 costs a lot)
Logitech G15 Keyboard

superb case if you place your case on the ground. no air intake on the sides, only in the front and it has a dust filter behind it (really reduces dust in your case, i've had it for a year now and it's still clean inside)

also has an excellent system for mounting HDD.

only thing i would add is some ram cooling (don't even bother if your're not planning to overclock your ram).

but metalkon's recommendations are perfect for your money , so there's not much to add. maybe an UPS. to protect your new pc from lightning strike, keep the irregularities from the net out of your computer and in case of a power outage it keeps it running for quite a while (so you can save important things, instead of losing everything). doesn't cost that much either, about €50-€150

Awesome information, folks. RAM you posted is indeed pricey Metalkon so I'll just go with budget friendly one. As for the case, what about;

Go with one of the cooler masters, the spedo is an alright case but, performance > looks.

The Cosmos looks good also while performing excellent, the HAF looks all industrial/miliary-like and is like a wind tunnel in there or something.

You won't regret it.

If you're games ever start running slowly, then blame it on your older Graphics Card and not the rest of the computer.

Some people say that the Intel i7 is 'Futureproof' with its upgrading capabilities, you may be abe to have this i7 last you for 10 years if your GPU and RAM is up to date. There is no way to tell for sure but the overclocking potential on the CPU itself is crazy for future uses.

If you have all of the money with you right now, then you could buy from www.NCIX.com and have them put the computer together and have it tested for an extra $50 through their PC Builder. I never tried it before but its an option for you if you don't wanna bother putting it together yourself. Just put it all together on the site without a graphics card, then add your 9600 to the motherboard yourself at home.

I'll be getting the graphic card as well, I don't want my system to be bottlenecked. =(

Any monitor suggestions?

Edit: Actually, I'd like to put it together myself so I get to know these things. =D
