You call 700$ a decent price...
a x1800xt you can buy for 400$ and the nvidia card is not 80% faster its 10-15% faster.

If you want the best go for X1900XTX.

    Cost/speed i say X850XT 300$

Also agree with hej, i don't understand how you can call the 7900gtx good value.

The x1800xt 256mb has out performed the 7900GT in most tests, and with the 7900GTX you only get about a 20% increase over a 7900GT. So i don't know how you figured out the 7900GTX is twice as good as a x1800xt

If you want the best card on the market, it is not the 7900gtx, its the x1900xtx

But for best power + best price, the x1800xt wins hands down.

Notice also how the card i recommended was 512mb, not 256. The higher memory is gonna be needed alot more in games coming up, it also helps with running higher screen resolution with all eye candy.

For a guide of whats best heres a little list (1. being best) also notice the prices:

    1. ATI X1900XTX 512mb 600-650$

    2. NVIDIA 7900GTX 256mb 650-700$

    3. ATI X1900XT 256mb 550-600$

    4. ATI X1800XT 512mb 400-500$

    5. ATI X1800XT 256mb 350-400$

    6. NVIDIA 7900GT 256mb 380-430$

    7. ATI X850XT 256mb (Not sure on the price, less than 300$)

    8. NVIDIA 6800Ultra 256mb (Not sure on the price, less than 300$)

I won't go any lower, coz they wouldn't be worth upgrading too.

Do you need everything? Keyboard/mouse, monitor, case, cd drive, harddrive?

Or just a cpu, ram, mobo and gfx card?

1200$ won't get you a very good PC, did you want it to be able to play any game coming out at high resolution with all the eye candy on?

Or just something to play ko at 100fps?

    biased?

ehh... anyways get any card you want that has fancey lettering on the box. I have an old 6800gt and it runs anything I need smoothly, I dont understand why people are willing to pay 500+$ for a video card just because it scored higher "benchmarks". Just get any newer ati/nvidia card that has over 256 megs..

spend that extra money on a better cpu, better cooling system or more ram.... video cards are such a waste to spend top dollar on, they will go outdated faster than any other part you buy,

Im not biased, im just stating the facts, i actually own a nvida card myself.

I agree, theres no point getting the very best graphics card out unless you really can afford to replace it in 1-2 months. But i disagree about buying a low end card and spending more on the cpu/ram/cooling. Running a high performance PC isn't just about having high spec parts, but its down to how balanced your PC is. Its really important not to bottleneck a system. Your PC can only run as fast as your worst peice of hardware.
