Why not ? as long as he doesn't expect to run in ultra graphic settings and morel like low/medium settings 1080p, pretty sure its fine.

Tho you can just simply do this and get your answer yourself

You can get some parts for that much, but not the textbook definition of a 2017 "gaming pc", not even close.

Try to get a GTX 1050 video card, an I3 processor (or used I5 / I7), a mobo that can handle the aforementioned processors, at least 8 GB ram, at least 400w psu and a 500GB HDD.

I hope you don't also need peripherals.

I mean it'd probably just be better to upgrade whatever he has (if he has anything that's still usable that is)

I had never built a computer either and I did it (and saved a fair amount by doing so) -- YouTube can teach you all you need to know. I would personally save my money and piece-by-piece something together worth having (e.g. look for deals, sales, black friday, etc.). You really won't get much for $500.

https://pcpartpicker.com/ I used this site a lot when I was picking individual parts for my build.

If you have no idea what individual parts to get, Newegg has a cool DIY PC section where you can buy everything in bulk to build your PC at a nice discount, but your flexibility is limited.

Hope you don't need a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. Good luck!

pcpartpicker is the best website to use they have guides and also complete builds w/ full details and also have the websites listed where the products can be purchased.

mobo/ram/cpu aren't compatible. try to get a newer cpu. if you want to buy intel wait for next gen, 4core 8thread will be irrelevant next year. try to get 1050 ti instead of 1050.

    edit: checked out the site

    keep hdd, ssd, psu

    gpu

    mobo

When dealing with fixed budget of 500$ for new PC, you should buy a gaming PC with at least 1 very good component if not two. Use the computer and update it by time when you get more money to create the monster PC, if that's what you want.
