I use smudge alot(leafs, wet oil, x-brush) and sometimes a couple of C4D-Renders.
So what i do is, I start with a gradiant black+light color(that goes ok with the render), then I paste the render and copy it 10-15 times, then I start to smudge on every layer(exept the top one).

Pic2: Brushes(Shape dynamics,,etc)
Pic3: smudge the layers
