I use vista on my laptop(s), xp on my pc. I like to have the weather and stock updates on my desktop while I'm away and considering it's not my main pc I don't experience a lot of crashing.

People who swear by linux are nerds who enjoy spending hours trying to install one program thats useless to mainstream america. I enjoy fooling around with SuSE, but people just won't admit XP is nearly as stable as most linux flavors. Am I the only one old enough to remember when XP was just as crappy as Vista is now? Give Vista a couple of years and it will be as stable as anything else.

Although, I do plan to put Redhat on my new toy.

A few of our clients are switching from server 2003 to linux and it's a portable way to demonstrate the differences.

    You call windows stable? lol..
Unix based system were always more stable simply because of the security reason .
You normally login with administrator rights, means bunches of cashe and temp files and regedits you never need will fly into ur registry ... sooner or later every win crash.
And dont tell me you didnt experience any lack of performance after haveing windows installed for more then 3 months.
Win Nt always gets more and more slower.

Tho i can imagine vista will be good too in the future.
btw i dont need hours to install 1 program , i need 10 secs
just because u r unable to doesnt mean every1 is ;>
no clue why u would call any1 whos using linux nerd ,
you just have to get more deep into the matter...

You should read my post again, I use linux myself at times. I said people who swear by it are nerds, because it will never be enough of an OS for mainstream users. No, so far I haven't noticed any slow down at all on my vista laptop. I have a qosmio with 4 gigs of ram and core duo 2.4, everything runs very smoothly. I woulden't really bother keeping vista on anything much slower.

By the way, XP with all the latest patches is plenty stable. Sure, you have to defrag it every month but at least I get to run some actual programs. Wine is too slow for most things to be useful. It's like downgrading your pc 10 years back. No, you need more than 10 secs to install most programs, but I was certainly exagerating. No, it doesen't take me an hour.

As for security, thats indefinate. Linux is much more secure. Certainly not for the archetecture, but because it's still not mainstream. Therefore, it will always be a better OS for servers and the like.
