    48/2 (9+3)

    48/2 evaluates to 24
    9+3 evaluates to 12
    Multiply 24 and 12

    1
    48/2*(9+3) evaluates to 288
    The final answer is 288

Dunno if you're serious or not but i'll break it down

    PEMDAS

    List of priorities:

    1) Parenthesis (this mean what ever is in the INSIDE)
    2) Exponents
    2) Mult AND Div
    3) Add AND Sub

    So we have 48/2(9+3)

We firstly take care of the inside of the parenthesis (9+3) and we get 48/2(12), we are now done with all the parenthesis cus 12 can't be broken down more.

We now move onto Mult and Div from LEFT TO RIGHT. We do the first one we see. And the first one is 48/2 so we get 24*12 = 288.

    /thread.

So people really just overlook the distributive property?

Making it 48/(18+6), considering the 2 is still part of the parentheses.

I'm not gonna get into this, this was written about 124124124 times in that thread and i read about 40 pages rofl.

im out of this argument, if you want join the misc, post a new thread about it and get 124214 replies in 1 minutem have fun

edit: no 2 is not part of the paranthesis, it is outside of it. so after you did (9+3) we now have 48/2*12 and we do Mul and Div from left to right.

    thank god someone remembers math!

simplification don't add a star and take out the parentheses cuz thats wrong, and may god help whom ever thought it was 288!

The structure of the problem is what confuses people...but thankfully solutions aren't dependent on how you look at a problem.

    48÷2(9+3) = 48÷(2(9+3) = 48÷24 = 2.

People are confusing the above with the following problem:

    48 ÷ 2 × 12 would not be 48 ÷ 24, but is rather 24 × 12, which is 288. (which is what MushtMan is seeing it as)

There's a reason why there's a parenthesis on the top equation but none in the second example equation...

I dunno how to simplify this further but the answer is 2.
