actually it is 2 then, yes, but we're typing into computers now so it can't be on other way =) that pretty much shows that the math is relative too, just like everything

Doing Brackets / Parenthesis means solving the inside... once you're done with that you're done and move onto M and D

It's an ambiguous case nowadays and people teach differently mainly because C# and many other programmings will get you 288. And in fact, in most of my classes the answer would be 288 because I am taking engineering classes and they are centered around C#.

two common ways people see it as:
48÷2x(9+3) - this is the way i would solve it considering my background
    or
    48
    ___
    2(9+3)

People don't use such notations in college or upper division classes. Professors would usually distinguish between the two.

    Mathway: Simplify= 288

    if you still don't believe

Go get a TI 84 plus or whatever scientific calculator and use it it's 288

    or:
    48/2*(9+3)
    48 /2 * 12
    = 24 *12

48/(2*(9+3)) would give u 2 as an answer

im pretty sure it's 2 , ppl are confused :

    48/2=24
    9+3=12
    combine

    24x12=288
    Incorrectly

but if viewed from the correct side , it's :

    48 / 2*(9+3) so ...

    48 / 2*12 =

    48 /24 =

    so .. 2

    exactly

    no --> that would be 48 / (2*(9+3))
    48 / (2*12)
    48/ 24
    = 2

48/(2*(9+3)) aint the same as 48/2*(9+3)

Do the exact same thing on the calculator and enter it exactly as the question is written meaning don't add the * after the 2.

On my TI-84+ i entered 48/2(9+3) and it says 288
As some math geniuses here state its two:
does that mean the schools here etc teach math BS and texas instruments has got the wrong view as well?

    doesn't change a thing

    * or no * , stays 288
Incase you don't believe me, I can always take a pic of it

    48/2(9+3)=288
    48/(2(9+3)=2
    48/2*(9+3)= 288
    (9+3)48/2= 288
    (9+3)*48/2= 288

No matter what way you put it there is only 1 way to get the answer 2 and you would have to inclose the 2 with a ( to make the order change from left to right to start with the () again.

Original question was 48/2(9+3) easy enough.

These are both done on TI-84 Plus Calc that is used to take the ACT.

People are mistaking the order from inside the (). Just because the 2 is next to the not inside the ().

everyones getting different answers because everyone is doing 2 different problems. and yes M comes before D in the word PEMDAS. but as far as doing it in an equation you do whatever comes first, going left to right.
so...im just going to keep bumping this until people understand what "inside parenthesis means" and for people to stop googling the order of operations
"PEMDAS" and thinking they understand how it works.

    ----- * (9+3) = 288
    2

is how it should be written there is no brackets

if there was brackets then it would be 2

    HOLY SHIT
The answer is 288 - I felt I got stupider after reading this thread.
You can't ADD PARENTHESES to the equation - it changes the answer.
