    Definition of the distributive property
a property indicating a special way in which multiplication is applied to addition of two or more numbers in which each term inside a set of parentheses can be multiplied by a factor outside the parentheses, such as a(b + c) = ab + ac; ex: 4(3 + 8) = 4(3) + 4(8)

when numbers are in parantheses the number outside the parantheses multiplies or "distributes" into all the numbers inside the parentheses

for this bit of information, i request that mino gets rid of his zombie thing, im scared.

Just to end this huge idiotic fest.

    Simplifying with Nested Parentheses

Read about the distributive property and simplifying parentheses. Ok, then go plug the problem into the box on page 2 of that website.

After you see that the answer is 2, facepalm.

PEMDAS is still in effect, the only way to simplify the parentheses though is by distributing the 2.

    WOW Math is easy.

    T rey stop lol

you can fight against it all you want, it doesnt make 2 the correct answer.

You always do the math in the brackets first so it would be
    9+3=12
    48/2=24
    24(12) = 288

Even if using distributive property you would still need to complete the initial problem which would be 48/2 = 24(9)= 216+ 24(3)= 72 which = 216+72=288.

It's not mathematically possible for the answer to be 2 and be accurate.

Theres really nothing to say to that, you've already made your mind up, its not my problem you don't know simple math, and I could care less if you ever understand it or not.

At least the title to this topic is right, half the people in the world are dumb.

lolol hey t-rex i was playing around on the website you gave us and here's what i found!

if you plug in 48/2(9+3) it equals 288
if you plug in 482(9+3) it equals 2

    i win !

wana know why. that site u used considered 48/2 a fraction. in which makes 24(12). but in reality it is

    48
    ---
2(9+3). putting it into sites is pointless because the basic calculators consider it a fraction.

How am I a disgrace to the Army if I'm right?

    482(9+3) = 288

You can refuse to accept it all you want, the fact remains the same. You're retarded, and you've officially made it public. You shut yourself down yet you keep coming back like you've succeeded lol, it's kinda funny watching.

haha yea that happens xD, however that's only because you completely changed the original problem, like Jedi said.

    Instead of 482(9+3)

    You made it 48(9+3)
    ~ 1111111112

Which is not the question at all, again its all about comprehending the question, not just blindly jumping in on it hoping a calculator can save you.

im out of this argument, if you want join the misc, post a new thread about it and get 124214 replies in 1 minutem have fun

edit: no 2 is not part of the paranthesis, it is outside of it. so after you did (9+3) we now have 48/2*12 and we do Mul and Div from left to right.
the u must not have made good grades in math because u forgot distributive property... yet another fail

alright you guys are rlly taking thsi way to far lol. mino stop flaming everyone although i think they are wrong aswell thy are entitled to an opinion nd the right to calmy argue lol.

i do believe what jedi is trying to say. you could cancel out parenthesis with distributive property. howeever you can also cancel them our by simply adding the numbers. when you put a number up against parenthesis its is implying multiplication.

so by simplying the equation of 2(9+3) to 2(12) you can simplify it to 2 * 12. in the below equations. note that 6 x (5+3) is the same as 6(5+3). and note "things in parentheses first".

Do things in Parentheses First. Example:

    6 (5 + 3)=6 8=
    48

    6 (5 + 3) =30 + 3=
    33

Exponents (Powers, Roots) before Multiply, Divide, Add or Subtract. Example:

    5 22=5 4=
    20

    5 22=102=
    100

Multiply or Divide before you Add or Subtract. Example:

    2 + 5 3=2 + 15=
    17

    2 + 5 3 =7 3=
    21

Otherwise just go left to right. Example:

    30 5 3 =6 3=
    18

    30 5 3 =30 15=
    2
