if you really want a small/ fuel efficient car get the Smart which just came to the USA. It's around 40mpg but it's 2 days, and extremely slow.
Recently (4 months ago) i bought my first car (leased). It's a '08 VW Jetta SE. I love it. I drives like a 6, but has fuel efficiency of a 4.
Just get a Beamer (aka BMW) :P
