If you don't know the parts that your computer is made from then go to your Control Panel/System to show your CPU/RAM and Desktop/RightClick-Properties/Settings/Advanced to find your Graphic/Video Card.

The i7 920 is well known to be overclocked to 3.8-4.2ghz using air and to be stable, people even get it to that on stock cooling and it only takes 5min to OC the thing.

You will need DDR3 Ram and an x58 Motherboard to use an i7 CPU.

I don't think that i'l OC the thing unless I need the extra power, i'l keep it on Turbo Mode which will keep it at about 3ghz without doing anything.

    Hi

    The Ram's Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800
    HDD: WD 750GB SATA2 7200rpm and a Maxtor 160gb 10000rpm

Going to upgrade soon, had to downgrade the CPU as my Freezer 7 Pro recently died, so back to stock cooling with 3.16 instead of 3.5

Anyhow, going for DDR3 + i7 965 soon, once the price is somewhat acceptable, as for right now they're freaking expensive.

Getting an i7 965 is a waste of money for 99% of the people who plan to get an i7. The best choice would most likely be getting an i7 920, you could get an i7 940 but they are almost the exact same product for the x2 the price, and an overclocked i7 920 is equal to the 940 (also overclocked) and can sometimes perform better.

An i7 is already overkill at 4.2ghz and 5.7ghz would take some serious cooling hardware.

it indeed does, I don't think it runs very stable at 5.7 either, they've just tried to max it out :P

Either way, I believe with an average priced cooling system you can easily run it on a stable 4.7-5.2.
Just like the E8500 I got, when I first bought it, most have claimed it to be maxed out at 3.6-3.7ghz, which is already a lot for back in the day, however just a week or so ago I've seen some guy maxing his E8500 out at 4.41ghz STABLE.

Overclocking is only needed if you need the extra cpu power, if its not needed then you won't need to overclock. I bought my i7 so I can overclock it in the future when programs and games are more demanding on the cpu. The CPU clock speed is not the only factor when it comes to cpu speed, and the i7 is the fastest public CPU in the world. And I chose to get the i7 for future computer upgrading to be possible so I won't have to buy a new PC in 5+ years, i'l just have to upgrade the Video Card.

And you payed a complete ripoff amount (no matter what its specs are) for your Laptop Willy, I don't know of anyone who payed even close to that for a Laptop.
