Bush ended Tuesday his two-day visit to Slovenia that opened his last European tour as US president during which he will also visit Germany and France, states that have expressed their scepticism over Ankara's EU membership. (...)[/b]

China too can offer much to EU but that doesnt mean they need to be in EU.

But accepting an Islamic country with some 70 mil ppl can seriously fuck up things.

if they get accepted into the EU = open borders = all the good honest people stay in turkey, work hard doing a normal job and all the scum comes over here because they heard you don't have to work and still get payed wich results in we paying taxes for them lazy bums and them doing all sorts of illegal stuff.

and thats why i (if i would have the chance) would vote no.

You are right about that, but look at the economic facts, turkey has one of the best growing economy's in the world, in few years they dont need to do that, they can stay at there home place. And Turkey is for century's the middle point of europe beginning with the ancient greeks and the romans, + its the only country where the majority is islamic and who is an ally of europe and nato.

Bush wants Turkey in the EU for purely diplomatic reasons, same as the UK. Turkey joining would put an EU border with the middle east. The truth is that Turkey offers nothing that Poland/Romania/Bulgaria dont offer already. There is already a surplus of cheap labour. The problem when Poland first joined was that their country was too poor compared to western europe so we saw mass emigration which caused chaos in certain places. It is better now because Poland is richer so some of them returned home. If Turkey joins it will be 10 times worse. They will simply flood across europe in their millions, looking for better pay. The transport infrastructure cannot cope with such a population shift, there is no housing market for it and there are not enough jobs for them. There will simply be thousands of them claiming benefits in the UK and France. Then there is the issue of human rights. Turkey's flirtations with Islamic law, and the oppression of the Kurds is not good enough for EU membership. I certainly don't trust a country with a majority of muslims. Islam is not compatible with a secular democracy, so i regard the system there as unstable. There is an islamic problem in the UK; they do not integrate into mainstream society so allowing them in unchecked would cause the diminishment of our secular values even further. This is the argument that most of Europe makes.

Most western european countries have individual vetoes on expansion decisions. So aslong as France and Germany (and most of them rest of europe) continue to hold their stance there is no chance on Turkey joining.

i agree here, if you see how many polish people came to holland in my case, to find work. people dont get work anymore since the polish people work for lower payments.
