question about expansion

i never playd wow so im not to sure

if i get Burning Crusade and i lvl a charactor there when a new expansion comes out(Wrath of the Lich King)and i get it will i have to star all over again new charactor and items? or will i stil have the same charector and everything i will just have the extra features of the new expansion?
need help plz

lets say u have a lv 55 mage and new expansion comes out..everything carries over ur mage his items etc only thing new would me the new items and maps

u will keep ur char an ur items nothing will be deleted thare will just be new zones u can go an higher lvl cap more quest that u can contiune with ur char
