Is pretty good if you ask me. The begining of it is complicated, since it explains the creation of the earth, elfs, humans and what not, but later on it describes histories of legendary characters, who are varely named over the Lord of the Rings and The hobbit. Personally, I liked as much or more than the last mentioned books, cuz there's battles in a much bigger scale, the glory of elfs on it's full explendor, the creation of the silmarils and the Valar themselves are just incredible. On it, mentions are done to real Heroes, Elfs that take Balrogs one on one and kick their asses, Humans owning Gods, rebelions, betrayal... I'd keep going but would spoil it for ya

I'd definetly recomend it, but if you are to read it, procure to have a book of maps or a guide about Tolkien's world, because when you read the books, Tolkien, and his son aswell, tend to write mentioning rutes, sections, areas, countries, etc... wich are hard to keep up with unless having proper maps to understand completely.

Thanks ALOT. I'm a big fan of the lotr, I get so fucking hyped about everything new that comes out from Tolkien lol. Where can I buy the proper maps and guides? I know theres a map in the beginning of each book, are you referring to them?

Right. The Silmarillion isn't new at all, nor are the books. As far as I know, at any good library that sells any Tolkien book, you should be able to find a guide or book made by someone else that describes that world, usually and Atlas or something else.

The maps at the begining/end of each book are good, but not descriptive, detailed, or wide enough to fully understand the stories imo. Is like having a map of Europe to understand WWII Europe battlefronts. IT might give you an idea of where it's happening, but you won't fully understand the paths taken, the strategies employed, the journey per-se nor the overall origins.

I just wanna clearify that Christopher Tolkien has put this book together but it is still his fathers work.

There's a book called "The Atlas Of Middle Earth" by Karen Wynn Fonstad, look it up.

If u like LOTR and Hobbit ure deffinitly gonna love this too. Like Dro said, its a bit too complicated at the beggining with the whole creation thing and gods and stuff, but later on it becomes very interesting. I should just add that its not one story like LOTR its more like a bunch of myths and legends going one after another tru chapters, but yeah, deffinitly the book will give u feeling how huge LOTR world is and how long history it has. If u ever wondered about places, history of cities and races in LOTR this book will explain everything.

OMG just got the latest Tolkien Book, called "The sons of Hurín." Tells the story of Turin Turambar and Nienor, of Hurín and Morwen and the Curse set upon them by Melkor. Ofc, the story appears on the sillmarillion aswell, but in here is more detailed. <3 the Black Sword! Despite his inbreeding problems...
