What is "Wild Card"? NFL

I was nvr really got into nfl until last season. I was wondering what "wild card" is. I think each division has it and with it can put you a spot in the playoffs. i think its for teams with second ranking in their own divisions. can anyone tell me what it is?

You have the four division leaders who make it and then the two teams with the best records that didn't win a division make the wild card spots in each conference no matter what division they are in..
