you have to open the dota replays via wc3/Single player. If you are new and want to get your feet wet, play AI and see what each item does. Its somewhat like KO in that aspect, in which each item has its own purpose against certain characters. i.e. arrow talia for archers, fire talia for paper mages, chitin shields vs. warriors, ss for mages, etc. Its just a matter of learning what each individual item does. In the end though, seeing what other people do is a great way to learn how to play.
