Yes, they make a lot of $$ each week. Too much to just shut down. So........

Maybe they are taking this money and buying new servers. IF that were true, the current servers would have to be shut down FOR A WEEK or more to move data over to the new ones. This would fix several issues (lag, connection, maybe a new pet patch???). So it could be all these rumors are true, but like the game you played in grade school about whispering a secret to someone and then having it told back to you after it went through 30 ppl. What you hear back is not the same as what you started. Close, but not quite.
