its a virtual private network. it gives your computer a unique IP Address. It basiclly tells whoevers looking at your ip the country that you bought the vpn for.

Ex. You buy a VPN for the united states, it will give you a ip address from the united states. So who evers looking at your IP address will think that your from the united states.
