    so this is the small problem my friend doesn't want to understand (he is also registred at ko4life but that smartass thinks him>me )

    I say;
    -2^2= -4 and (-2)^2= 4 are not the same because in the second case the -2 is in brackets and -2 x -2 = 4 as everyone knows I think.

    In the first case the -2 is not in brackets. I remember very good that my grammar school math teacher said once that if -2 is not in the brackets then

    -2^2 = -(2^2) = -2 x 2 = -4

    Can you prove him that I am right? :blink:

    -2^2 is the same as -1*(2)^2
    So you're right on this one :P

    Cuz

    (-2)² = -2 x -2 = you use the minus twice = gets positive
    -2² = - (2x2) = you use the minus once = stays negative
