    Originally, it was supposed to end with season 7; however, due to the writer's strike, they couldn't finish the season the way that they had wanted. Apparently, when FOX denied them an 8th season to wrap everything up and end the series, they sold it to a different network (evidently ABC), which picked it up for the 8th and final season.
