    Change power settings to what?

my laptop shuts down the monitor, but everything else stays on when it's connected to the net (it shuts down everything when on battery) this way i can easely close the laptop while everything keeps working (great for downloading stuff during exams in school  )

it should stay connected to the Internet that way. also check if the closing of the laptop doesn't override this.

How do I check to see if closing the laptop overrides power settings?

    Right Click on desktop,
    Properties,
    Screen Saver,
    Power,
    Power Schemes,

It's probably "Portable/Laptop" by default so you are going to change it to Always On and change every option to "Never"

    For example,

    Turn off Monitor: Never
Turn off Hard Disks: Never and others...

it's still only a wireless connection. if the signal is lost for a millisecond you're disconnected.

is there any way you could get a cable instead of wireless ?
